d'Ojee update and picture "Dear Friends, Patrick (aka Stimpy) "We bought Stimpy a bed that looks just like him. Its really funny because we have 2 other cats and he knows thats HIS bed. He kicks them out if they get in it. He loves to lay by the fire place:)" Winning with Vegas "I decided it was time for me to adopt a dog so I logged on to Petfinder.com for the first time. I wanted a St. Bernard, but as I began to look through the list of breeds I discovered there were a lot of them on there that I had never heard before. One by one I started looking through all the unfamiliar breeds until I came to the "G's". Great Pyrenees. "What's a Great Pyrenees" I wondered. When I opened up the first picture I discovered what love at first sight was. She was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen. For about a week I would sit at my desk everyday and pull up the picture of this massive white dog and just stare at her. How could somebody not have wanted her? I went back in forth in my head and ultimately just decided to go for it. I drove to Tipton where she was staying with a foster family in their back yard with a few other rescue dogs. She ran right to me and that sealed the deal. I paid the adoption fee, got a little info on her background, and we headed back to Cedar Rapids to start our new life. Little did I know the trouble was just starting. She was approximately a year old when I got her (her real birthday is unknown because she was abandoned) and she had never lived inside before. We walked up to the door of my house but she halted at the door frame, she wouldn't go through it. Going into a house was a scary and unfamiliar thing and she wasn't budging. She's 100 pounds, but I had to pick her up and take her in the house, it was the only way to get her inside. This routine went on for a while until she got used to the idea, and eventually she started walking through on her own. Stairs were not so easy. My bedroom is on the second floor and I didn't want to leave her alone at night so I would try to get her to walk up the stairs with me. This concept was beyond her comprehension, she had never been on stairs before. So for the first two months I had to carry her up and down the stairs everyday. We worked on it, and with time, she learned how to walk up and down! on her own. The worst part was the potty training. She had always lived outside, and at a year old had always been able to go wherever she pleased. For about the first two years I had to clean up a major accident every single day. Whether it was in her kennel or her sneaking to the other room and going on the carpet. And these were not small messes. It was very frustrating. The accidents slowly became less frequent and eventually they stopped. She was finally potty trained. I had to tear out every inch of carpet in my house when it was all over. I had wanted to give up so many times but I'm so glad I didn't. Vegas is my best friend and the reason I'm excited to come home from work everyday. She goes everywhere with me, and the words "Wanna go for a car ride" still send her massive body bounding up and down in the air. She has brought an immeasurable amount of joy to my life and I wouldn't trade one moment with her, good or bad, for anything in the world. I adopted her! December 1st 2001, so this month makes 7 years for us and I just wanted to take a moment and thank Petfinder.com and Friends of the Animals in Tipton, IA for bringing us together. Thank you! " Pumpkin and Dandelion (formerly known as Otis)
"Hello Friends of the Animals, Here's an update on Pumpkin and Otis (we renamed him Dandelion). When we got Pumpkin in September it didn't take long for him to get used to his new home and new people. He spent a few days hiding in the basement or in small spaces, but soon he was cuddling up with us on the couch and even crawling under the covers at night. He is still VERY playful and full of energy. You can tell he loves to have a home he can run around in and sometimes he does just that. He'll just run from room to room and he loves to climb too. He especially likes jumping on window sills so he can look at birds outside. When we got him from the shelter we felt bad about leaving his friend Otis behind. We have an older cat, Taj but he isn't interested in playing, so we thought another young cat friend for our playful, precious, pretty and perfect Pumpkin would be good. Then one day we were in Petland buying filters for our fish tank when we saw the posters from your shelter and there was Otis. We've always had this "two cat" limit, but finally we just decided to just go for it. When we brought Dandelion home you could tell Pumpkin recognized him right away. He wasn't territorial at all and just wanted to chase Dandelion around and play with him. Dandelion was pretty timid at first. He hid in the basement for two days, but one night when the house was quiet, my husband coaxed Dandelion upstairs and spent some time with him to get him used to his new home. He's doing great! He and Pumpkin love to chase each other around and Dandelion is getting pretty cuddly and affectionate with us. Taj is fine too. It took him awhile to get used to Pumpkin, but one more cat isn't much different to him. In fact, he's happy to just take a nap in some quiet corner of the house while the two little boys romp around. So, it turns out three cats is not too many. There's a little more cat hair to vacuum, more food to buy, more cat litter to scoop, but also one more cat to love and provide a home for. Don't worry though, three is absolutely our limit. I do tell everyone who might be looking for a cat or dog to check you guys out and I hope all of your animals find good homes soon! Thanks for all you do to take care of the homeless animals of Cedar County! Helen, Neil and Ellie Lindhorst" Bo!!! "Hi Guys!!!! We just wanted to let you know Bo is doing great!!! He is really loving his rides to take cloey to school in the morning with me and to pick her up in the afternoon with Gary. We've been walking him all over the place and playing like crazy in fact last night he fell asleep in the yard at about 8:00 cause he was so tuckered out from playing, we have to wake him up to go to his bed in the garage LOL. We haven't had any issues at all hes eating good no accidents even in the garage, we've only heard him howl once and it was when Gary left for work yeterday. He is an amazing boy and we can only credit that to you guys!!! Thanks so much!!! we'll keep you informed and I attatched a picture from Tuesday night when we got home with him for you!!! Thanks!!! Gary, Dawn and Cloey Osa (aka Peaches) "Osa (aka Peaches) has adapted to her new home just fine. She has a favorite toy (stuffed squirrel) that she carries all over the house. She is doing nicely with potting outside ( one accident, but that isn't bad) the only problem is she goes to the door and waits, but doesn't let you know that she is waiting - no barks, whines or scratching, so I made a rope of bells and now we are learning to ring it to go outside. I have attached a couple of pictures I took with my cell phone. they aren't very good, but will be taking more with camera when I remember to buy new batteries! She did go to the vet and got a clean bill of health. Davenport, IA Clara and Osa " Share Your Happy Tails!
